Linda Yamamoto
Dr. Yamamoto is a three-time UConn alum, having earned a BS in Actuarial Science and MS and PhD in Kinesiology. Her contribution to her professional environment includes her current position as an Assistant Professor and Founding Program Director of Exercise Science in the Department Health Sciences at the University of Hartford. In this role, she excels in overseeing undergraduate research in exercise physiology and strength and conditioning, develops community relationships for student internships, consistently develops strategies to recruit and retain students. Her ability to implement innovative teaching practices is remarkable. She has also leveraged her relationships with UConn’s Department of Kinesiology and UConn Health’s Center on Aging to establish collaborative research initiatives. While Dr. Yamamoto’s path has not been traditional, she has established herself as a leader in her field and an inspiration for colleagues and students alike.
Yuri Hosokawa
Yuri already knows her life’s mission, and it’s no small feat. The kinesiology and exercise science alumna wants to improve pre-hospital care for people at high risk of exertional heat stroke in her home country of Japan. Thanks to the knowledge she gained at UConn and her drive to make a difference, Hosokawa has the opportunity to achieve this goal much sooner than she ever expected.
Chuck Cota
Cota worked at Yale New Haven for 48 years before retiring in 2021. He was a physical therapist and later manager of rehabilitation services. During his career, Cota was instrumental in developing four physical therapy departments at the hospital’s St. Raphael and Milford campuses.
“It was really a big honor for me, I’ve always felt very close with UConn and the staff here. I also know many of the past recipients [of the Joseph Smey Excellence in Physical Therapy Alumni Award] and to be mentioned alongside them is really quite an honor."
He advises, "Stay in contact with the school and your fellow classmates, I think that’s really important because it’ll enrich your career and it’s good to stay in touch with people.”
