The facilities within the Department of Kinesiology are located in buildings throughout the Storrs, CT campus, including the iconic Harry A. Gampel Pavilion (Gampel Pavilion) on Hillside Road, the Kinesiology Building on Horsebarn Hill Road, and the Agricultural Biotechnology Laboratory within the new BioScience Complex on Jerry Yang Way.
Harry A. Gampel Pavilion
Harry A. Gampel Pavilion (Gampel Pavilion) UConn’s on-campus facility serves as the home court of the men's and women's national championship basketball and women’s volleyball programs, and is also home to several laboratories and academic spaces. Gampel Pavilion totals more than 171,000 square feet, with an additional 39,000 square foot natatorium, including a 50- meter Olympic size swimming pool. Gampel Pavilion is located within the heart of UConn’s athletic facilities, including the Field House sports complex, sport practice fields, athletic training and sport performance centers, football complex, ice rink, and track and field facilities. Many, if not most, of UConn’s intercollegiate athletes seek treatment in Gampel Pavilion from Department of Kinesiology faculty, clinicians, and students at some point in their stay at UConn. Department offices for 15 faculty and 20 staff, as well as several Kinesiology labs are housed within Gampel Pavilion.
Human Performance Laboratory
The Human Performance Laboratory (HPL) is the umbrella entity of the research facilities and research support services within Gampel Pavilion. The HPL occupies over 7,800 sq feet of laboratory space for research in thermoregulation, hydration, and athlete performance testing. The HPL serves as the primary site for 25 faculty, 30 graduate students, and more than 100 undergraduate students performing research and academic training in human exercise physiology, exercise and heat acclimation, aerobic and resistance training, nutritional supplement effects on physical performance, human hydration biomarkers, body temperature regulation, exertional heat illnesses, subcellular signaling, as well as endocrine, heat shock protein, and cytokine responses.
Kinesiology Building
The 15,000 sq. ft. Kinesiology Building premises on Horsebarn Hill Road, Storrs, CT is dedicated to the Doctor of Physical Therapy academic program at UConn and includes faculty offices, classrooms, as well as clinical research labs and large lab/gym spaces. The Kinesiology Building includes 4 high-tech classrooms (total: 2000 sq. ft.) that are available as training spaces for graduate and undergraduate students. The facility also has around 2500 sq. ft. area dedicated to research in the form of 4 laboratories for data collection and data analysis. The facility also houses 2 large gym spaces occupying a 3000 sq. ft. area that are available to students and faculty for teaching and research purposes.
