Plant productivity is intricately linked to its microbiome, as beneficial microbes can solubilize nutrients, enhance stress tolerance, and inhibit pathogens. Diverse predatory eukaryotes called protists are an abundant but little-studied part of the rhizosphere environment. Protists shape the bacterial community through selective predation, enhancing the fitness and activity of certain plant beneficial bacteria. But how do the bacteria benefit from predators? This question inspired our plant bacteriology lab, through collaboration with UCONN, to expand our focus to protists and their effects on rhizosphere bacteria. Using amplicon, metagenomic, and transcriptomic sequencing of the protist and plant microbiomes, we identified signaling traits prevalent among protist-associated bacteria, and found that some of the molecular signals promoted growth of diverse protists. By understanding how beneficial bacteria interact with protists, we hope this research will reveal new strategies to optimize sustainable crop production.
Lindsay Triplett is Agricultural Scientist, Department Head of Plant Pathology and Ecology, and Vice Director of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station. She grew up in rural Indiana and earned a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from Michigan State University, focusing on bacterial plant pathogens, before completing postdoctoral research at Colorado State University. She loves living in Connecticut and doing interdisciplinary research at a small institution.
